The Meiners Oaks Summer 2026 Shift: What Changed On El Roblar, And What Didn't

For a stretch of road that runs less than a mile between Ventura River and downtown Ojai, El Roblar Drive did more turnover in six weeks this winter than it had done in six years. A bakery-bistro closed on a Friday. A new restaurant opened a soft door two Fridays later. The baker went wholesale. The general manager took the keys.

That sequence reads like churn. It isn't. Read together, the January handoff and the anchor businesses that didn't budge point to something quieter: El Roblar is finally deep enough to let a specialist specialize, and a restaurateur inherit a proven room instead of building one from scratch.

The 535 W. El Roblar Handoff

If you drove past the corner all winter and squinted at the signage, the change was easy to miss. Chris Bakes opened at 535 W. El Roblar on April 1, 2025, and closed Jan. 16, 2026. Reframe Bistro Ojai entered its soft-opening phase on Jan. 30, led by former Chris Bakes general manager Sam Petry with head chef Logan Hudson.

Current hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday for brunch and 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday for dinner, with the official grand-opening date to be announced on @reframebistro.ojai and the front door itself.

Owner Chris Ritke framed his exit as a return to what got him into the storefront in the first place. In Petry's words:

"Serving good food, made with love... creating a warm and inviting community space for Meiners Oaks and Ojai."

That is a small statement, but it explains why the sign changed and the room didn't. The lease, the kitchen, the front-of-house rhythm all stayed intact. What got swapped out was the operator.

Where The Sourdough Went

The more interesting move is what Ritke did next. Rather than shutter the sourdough program with the storefront, he split it out into a wholesale operation and placed it on three counters residents already visit on their regular loop through town.

Sandra Jones, formerly chef at Chris Bakes, produces charcuterie under the Dusty Daze Catering label and moves through the same outlets. For a resident, the practical read is simple: the product you liked at 535 W. El Roblar didn't disappear, it just spread out. Two morning stops instead of one dinner reservation.

The Anchors That Didn't Move

The reason the handoff didn't rattle the block is that the block already had a spine. El Roblar's daily-life infrastructure ran uninterrupted through the winter and is intact for summer.

Farmer and the Cook at 339 W. El Roblar remains what it has been since Steve Sprinkel and Olivia Chase set it up: a certified-organic farm café, market, and CSA pick-up, with a weekend flatbread pop-up and extended hours to 8 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. Sprinkel farms 12 CCOF-certified acres a short drive away, and much of what lands on the salad bar came off that ground.

Watkins Ranch Butcher Shop at 105 E. El Roblar keeps its Tuesday-through-Saturday counter and holds a 100 out of 100 estimated health score in Ventura County's public inspection data. Meiners Oaks Hardware, the local Ace at 121 E. El Roblar, opens at 7 a.m. on weekdays, which is the detail that matters if you have contractors on a job site and forgot the two-inch fasteners. Meiners Oaks Nursery at 312 W. El Roblar keeps a seven-day 9:30 to 4 schedule.

Add the standing list of neighborhood restaurants that carried through the winter unchanged: Papa Lennon's Pizzeria, Ojai Rôtie, The Nest, Ojai Pub, Ojai Noodle House, The Ranch House. None of these are new, and that is the point. The turnover at 535 happened against a backdrop stable enough to absorb it.

A Short Walk Or Shorter Drive To Libbey Bowl

The other summer development for Meiners Oaks residents is not on El Roblar at all. It is at the far end of Ojai Avenue, where Libbey Bowl's 973-seat schedule reads unusually deep for July and August. From most Meiners Oaks addresses the drive is under ten minutes, and street parking around Libbey Park is walkable from the west side of downtown for anyone willing to leave the car home.

Full ticketing and any additions are on the Libbey Bowl calendar via AXS. Two practical notes for locals: the venue is general admission with lawn seating that permits blankets only, and coolers, glass, and picnic baskets are not allowed inside. Plan the dinner before, not during. A 5 p.m. Reframe seating followed by a 7 p.m. curtain is a workable Tuesday.

What The Block Now Supports

Step back from the individual updates and the shape of what happened this winter comes into focus. A single storefront hosted a bakery-bistro that discovered, roughly nine months in, that it was really two businesses trying to share one kitchen. The owner separated them. The baking went into wholesale distribution across three existing local counters. The dining room got handed to an operator who already knew the front of house and had a chef ready to run the pass.

That is not a story you can tell in a town where the retail base is thin. It requires enough foot traffic on El Roblar to support a bistro at 535, enough morning volume at Ojai Coffee Roasters and the Athletic Club to move wholesale bread, and enough neighboring anchors, Farmer and the Cook, Watkins Ranch, Papa Lennon's, to make the corner a destination on its own instead of a detour off Highway 33. Six or seven years ago, the same closure would have left a dark window for a season. This winter it left a two-week gap.

For someone who already lives here, the useful takeaway is small and specific. The sourdough is still around, just at three counters instead of one. The room at 535 is open again, on brunch and dinner hours worth memorizing. The anchors that made you comfortable moving to this side of the valley are exactly where you left them. And the summer calendar downtown is dense enough to fill most Tuesday and Friday nights through late August without leaving the 93023.

That is the version of Meiners Oaks that has been slowly assembling itself for a decade. This summer is the first one where you can see the whole thing from your own driveway.
